HI Richie - As long as you've check with a qualified health professional before you start exercising. If they have given you the OK then it is certainly safe to lift weights while attempting to lose weight. There are a couple of things to remember about this process. Adding muscle tissue to your frame will help improve your metabolism and the total number of calories your body will burn at rest and throughout the day. This will help drive a fat loss program. Notice I said "fat loss program" and not a weight loss program. If you are weight training and adding muscle tissue you may not see as many pounds come off of the scale since muscle weight is being added as you lose fat weight. But your percentage body fat ratio will improve and that is the more important number. Here is an URL to my other website www.Aging-No-More.com that has an articled entitled "Fat Burning Exercises for Losing Weight!" that I think would be helpful to you: http://www.aging-no-more.com/fat-burning-exercises.html

Combining your weight training with aerobic exercise in a circuit training program would maximize your goal of loosing weight while toning up. I hope this information helps. Dan
